Hey,

I just received a Mac G3 laptop as a gift and am planning on using it for recording. Yesterday I also purchased an Edirol UA-20 audio/midi interface. I tried installing the required software from this website. There is a UA-20 for Mac installation link about halfway down the page. I tried installing it by clicking the icon on my screen, which let me choose between 2 versions of the software; one for MacOs 9 and one for MacOs X. I clicked on MacOs X, as that is what I was using. Then there were directions (in Read_me) for me to install the program by clicking on the UA20USBdriver.pkg icon. This is where I encounter a problem, as a screen pops up saying "Open Failed. Couldn't open 'UA20USBdriver.pkg'" I am very new to Macs and have no idea where to go from here. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

tross,

not sure what version of Mac OS X you are running, but the error you are getting sounds like you may need to upgrade your version of stuffit expander that you are using. Older versions may not handle decompressing files stuffed with later versions. I downloaded the files and ran the installer without issue. I am running Mac OS X v10.4.3 and stuffit v.10.0.1.

You can download expander free from the Allume web page.

Give that a shot and post back if you are still running into problems.

peace,
deacon

Hey,

Thanks so much for your response. I downloaded the Stuffit Expander and tried downloading the Edirol UA-20 interface software again, and this time I had different problems. Before I installed the Stuffit Expander, the computer downloaded 3 items from the Rolandus website (read_me, installation for MacOs 9 and installation for MacOs X). This time, however, with the Stuffit Expander being the default opening program, only 1 item was downloaded (read_me). So I was able to read about how to install the Edirol interface software, but was given no option of actually installing it. Frustrating. Thanks for your reply, though.

Sincerely, tross

tross,

when I download the file I get UA-20.sit. When I use Stuffit to expand it, I get a folder labeled UA-20. inside are three items, readme.pdf, ua20_macos9.hqx and UA20USBDriver.tar.gz. If you get this far, you should be able to doubleclick on the UA20USBDriver.tar.gz file to open a folder with the correct installer package in it.

What version of the Mac OS are you running, i.e., 10.1, 10.2, etc.?

Hey,

Thanks again for your reply. Anything helps. I'm running 10.4.3. Before I downloaded the new version of stuffit I was getting 3 items, but only the read_me one would open. Now I'm getting 1 item, just read_me. Another time I got zero items, which was weird. I was thinking maybe the stuffit extension wasn't downloaded properly or something? I'm not sure. I'm thinking of just taking this interface back and getting one with a cd. Do you think I'd have the same problems trying to extract files from a cd? Thanks,

pete

tross,

no, I think this is definitely related to the attempt to unstuff the files. Too strange. When you get the .sit file, and doubleclick on it to open, what is happening? Also, does it show up as a 'box' icon for the .sit file? Have you tried downloading the file from the web page again? Or, would you like me to mail you the file separately (the .pkg file)?

let me know. I know it can be frustrating getting all this stuff set up.

Deacon,

Thanks much for the e-mail. I successfully installed it from that e-mail. For some reason it worked ok in that format. Now I'm having another problem, however. It's recording really quiet and there's a fairly noticeable hum in the background. I've messed around with all the nobs on the interface and increased the mic volume on my laptop, but to no avail. Also, I am using Audacity recording software. Thanks.

Deacon,

I took that interface back and exchanged it for a Tascam US-122 which is having different problems now. This sucks, but I'll be closing this discussion and creating a new topic with my new problems. Thanks for your help, though.
