A .sit file is fine. For some reason, your computer wants to open it with iPhoto, so if you click the .sit file icon (once) and then select Get Info from the Finder's File menu (Apple+I), there's an option at the bottom of the window that appears to determine what application should open this file. Choose Stuffit Expander, which is almost certainly on your system. If it's not, get it free from Aladdin (Google it, you'll find it easily enough).
Alternatively, you can Ctrl+click the .sit icon and choose Open With… from the drop-down menu. Again, go for Stuffit.
