Do you really need an audio card for what you are looking to do with your mac. I use Midi and audio and don't use a card. USB to Midi works fine, just plug directly into your Mac. Macs come ready to go for Midi.
If you were doing Audio I would suggest a Presonus "FireBox".
Hope that helps..

Firebox has a good relation quality price. She is very complete. The cards little by little are disappearing.

You will be able to get lots on a fast powerbook. Make sure it has a lot of RAM.

Like Ourmanflinty said, you will not crash with plug ins. I was using 512 ram at first without a problem, then I went to a gig just in case, and I have never crashed, of course there aren't too many things that make my powerbook crash.
I am using a powerbook 1.5ghz, I love it! Don't worry it's a great machine.

I'm with these guys, I have had no problems thus far with my powerbook. I spend time making music with this machine, the way it is supposed to be. No 'os tweaking' because its already stable and no audio driver issues because i use the Presonus Firebox which uses apple's core audio. Good luck with your purchase.

Without an audio interface you will be limited to 16bit audio, most people record at 24bit.
