yeah - i cant stress enough - avoid the Mbox if possible. I have both Mbox and a new Firebox. Besides the ability to run Pro Tools (which is cool, but overrated in my opinion) the Firebox Blows Away the Mbox.

Thanks to all for your ovewhemingly rich replies.
Forgive my delay in replying. Events would not allow.
I am starting to get the midi thing now.
I have no other stuff at the moment.
Let us check to see how I am doing with understanding the rest of the advice:
I need a software, that much seems clear. Either ProTools or Logic or Cubase.
I need a sound card, or some sort of external box (firebox, mbox )
I need a keyboard
I need a decent microphone.
I also need a preamp and an external mixing desk.

You need a software. Software is included with the hardware/interfaces/soundcards we have suggested, the mbox, the firebox, and the spike, only different software. You need a soundcard/audio interface. Mic preamps are built-in in all of the suggested hardware. You need a decent microphone. That is all for starting to recording "live" soundsources, bass, guitar vocals etc. My suggestion is that you start out by buying one of the suggested hardware/audio cards/interfaces, + a decent mic, and start to play around with it. Add midikeyboard or external mixing desk or external mic preamps (if you need all that!) when you start to get a hang on basic recording and editing, and getting more into the workings of things. No need to buy it all at once. I would recommend you to stick to the firebox or the mbox, because you get a version of one of the dinosaur software included, that is, software which has a large userbase, a history and a future, which are established tools. Then you won't be learning anything "in vain". Or you could look up another soundcard/interface and software which seems better to you. Remember that nothing is written in stone here. I like Pro Tools, so I recommend the Mbox, or, if you have more cash, the Digi002 or Digi002R, which are much better. It is matter of personal taste. BUT, you can't run Pro Tools if yuou don't have a Digidesign soundcard/interface/hardware! Ie mbox, digi002, digi002r, and some m-audio ones, but with the m-audio ones you have to buy Pro Tools, which is included with mbox and digi002/002r. Peace. Hope you can find your way in all this
