Logic 7 Pro (not Express!) has a very clever tempo mapper, which you could probably use.

Logic is better for writing. But it covers the pro-tools bases as well. In Vancouver a LOT of commercial heavey metal records are being produced on Logic.

But yeah, Pro Tools has Beat Detective. And that IS a useful feature.
