I haven't used it myself, but DSP Quattro is supposed to be a really good software editor - better than Peak. I tried out a demo of Peak, and I didn't like it eaither. So far I'm just using the built in audio editor in Logic.

you zoom in and out with apple-[ and apple-]
i encode MP3s all of the time....maybe you have an old version.
apple-L sets loop during playback, not very hard.
try to download/read the manual... im sure you can find all of this out.
The problem is that Peak is a very bad designed program which crashes a lot of the times and it doesn't have an MP3 encoder as standard! The zoom is ridiculous ( I couldn't discovered how to zoom in and out gradually , in steps... It's all zoomed in or all zoomed out - what is the use of this?!). Why can't I play a selection as a loop ? Do I have to tell the program all the times that the selection is a loop? What a waste of time!
