We have a Yamaha Clavinova electronic piano, and of course, Macs. I have a MIDI-USB interface (Yamaha UX16) with drivers installed. I also have the new GarageBand from Apple (and the old one) and Finale's "PrintMusic" software for OSX.

I have played with all the configurations and can't get the computer to recognize that there is a piano connected. All I want to do, at this point, is to get my daughter a setup where she can play on the Clav, and have the notes recorded for playback in the computer (using GarageBand) or to compose sheet music (in Finale PrintMusic).

Using Panther, the most recent update installed. Audio MIDI Setup recognizes the Yamaha UX16, but will not recognize the piano no matter what I try. The UX16 shows a red "power on" light, and with certain plug configurations, shows a green "activity" light, but no Clav appears in Audio MIDI Setup. If I create a new MIDI device, called "Clav" or whatever, and then test setup, I get a booming, disharmonic response from the piano when I click on the uplink connector, but no response at all when I tinkle the piano keyboard.

I'm completely lost and need a MIDI mac person to lead me to salvation. Do you have any leads??

I'll start with trying to help you set up recording in GarageBand. If that's accomplished using Finale will be simple.

It is good that your UX16 is being detected. I'm assuming that you've correctly installed all drivers for it, am I correct?

Make sure you have your Clavinova plugged in correctly. The in goes into the out and the out goes into the in (someone please correct me if I am wrong). Are you sure your cables are plugged in correctly?

Strangeghost,
Double check your cables in and out as Vissequ suggests. I have a CLP-115 MIDI-OUT to a M-Audio Audiophile 2496 MIDI-IN (PCI Card), that works flawlessly except for slow playback / latency issues. It only required selecting the proper source input in Garageband to get the MIDI recorded in Garageband.

Try Garageband > Preferences > Audio / MIDI then select Audio Input and your device should show up in that list.

I have never had to adjust the Audio MIDI Setup to get communication. It really was that simple.

You could also try something called MIDI-Monitor to see what, if anything, is getting through your MIDI connections.

Yes as the Apparation says, GarageBand's input and out settings ARE NOT THE SAME as Macintosh 10's. You will need to set them to your interface in both preference panels.

You got me up and running. Just knowing for sure how to plug the cables in was a good start. :-)

I have the piano recording into Garage Band now. Everything seems to work though I'm still at the very beginning stages of playing with this thing.

Haven't tried Finale yet (it's just PrintMusic, not the full Finale package).

Thanks everyone!

I've used the Print Music 2004 Demo, so if you need help let me know. If your Clav is turned on then Print Music should have no problem reading it, but getting it to scribe to both clefs, oooh that was always a tricky one for me. Can't help you there.
