DP on a 1 Ghz G4? Sure.
You can probably do most projects with the Mac G4, but I'd take the RAM up to 1.5 ghz. I'm running DP 4.5 on an 867 Mhz and a 1.3 dual processor G4. Without 1.5 Ghz of RAM on the dual processor G4, performance was sluggish. You'll only run into problems with CPU intensive plug ins, for which you'll need a dual processor.
Even with a G4 dual processor, you'll have limitations that only a 2.5 Ghz Mac G5 can handle. For instance, on my dual-processor 1.3 Ghz mac, I've got about 40 tracks open in a DP project with numerous vocal retakes, along with two UAD-1 plug-ins on 3 vocal tracks and Auto Tune, plug UAD-1 Nigel on a synth. When I tried adding another layer of UAD plug-ins to the vocal tracks, the Pultec Pro, the machine choked.

If you take advantage of the "Freeze Tracks" feature and increase buffer size for mixing (when you'll be using more plug-ins and taxing the processor more), it can run more efficiently than DP 4.0. That said, I can't wait to get a G5.
