You should get some interesting responses to this question!
My advice - spend just a little more money and get yourself a Sennheiser MD421. It's extremely versatile, rugged, sounds excellent. Around $300 new. Another great mic (more in your price range) is the Shure SM57. Can be used for everything. Very rugged. Around $80-90. -------------------- "...I just don't know...it sounds funny."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mac G5, dual 2.0 GHz, MOTU 828 MkII interface, Virus TI Keyboard, Genelec 1029A and Mackie HR824 monitors, Mackie Control Universal, Presonus Eureka and ART DPS II preamps, Presonus Central Station, AKG C1000S and C3000 mics. Logic Pro 7.2, Trilogy, Stylus, Atmosphere, Native Instruments Komplete 2. |

I second the sm-57. great for Male vocals, Guitar Amps and Drums.
Another favorite all around mic is the Rode NT series. great performance at a great price. Scott |

Studio Projects C1 Condenser Microphone
street price around $199 http://www.macmidimusic.com/prod.itml/icOid/3896 http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/C1Mic/ Have a read of the review here Quote from review: "At the very least the C1 is a tremendous value for the project studio, and with a street price around $200 is certainly the best sounding $200 studio vocal mic ever made. And it should be a real wake-up call to the German mic companies who persist in selling their mics at a premium price." Also reviewed here I've used the mic and it's definitely one of the best I've heard for the price. |

I agree with the SM57 choice. It is extremely versatile. It is a great instrument mic and works well for vocals (though I prefer a SM58). In addition, they are built very rugged and are essential for the gigging artist. Also, unlike condenser mics they do not require phantom power. Most importantly, they are easy on your check book!
My suggestion: Go to your local music store and try various mics out in your price range. A great start would be checking out the mics suggested to you in this forum. Good luck, KC |
