Generally speaking ultra-wide SCSI are the fastest. ( they are also by far the most expensive twice/thrice the price of similar ide/ata-drives) ( they are also somewhat limited in GB capacity - around 36/72Gb )
USB and firewire harddrives are generally usual Ide/ata 130/133 harddrives used in common pc:s and newer Mac:s.
They are only equipped with an electronics interface that handles the USB/Firewire protocol respectively - so the computer can communicate with the harddrive through these protocols.
Maxtor Diamonds ultra ata/ide 133, 7200rpm drives with the 8Mb cache is very good drives. Maxtor makes a series of external Firewire/USB-2.0 drives (called OneTouch) that uses these mechanisms. Check them out.
