I'm looking to double my RAM from 512MB to 1Gig in my 1rst generation quicksilver 867 (single processor.) I know I need PC133 SDRAM, but can I get any SDRAM, or does it HAVE to be mac-compatible? (can I get it from a PC store and not have to pay Mac prices?)

Thanks!
d.

RAM is something you definitely don't want to go the cheap route on. Many people have been having new problems on their old machines once they upgrade to OSX. Nine times out of ten, the problems can be traced to cheap RAM. Sometimes it works fine for years under OS9, then they upgrade to OSX, and big problems crop up. OSX seems to be more sensitive to the quality of RAM than OS9 was. even if you're using OS9, I wouldn't recommend getting cheap RAM, because you may want to upgrade your OS in the future.
I recommend RAMJET.com. They're cheaper than buying from Apple, and so far there are no bad reports about their RAM chips.

Great suggestion by PristineRec, and if that doesn't work you can always go the official apple ram - almost always guaranteed to work - and if you are a student make sure u get the educational discount

Thanks again...

Unfortunately, the Apple Canada store doesn't sell memory on it's own. I found an Apple distributor at my school (has educational discounts) and they sell 512MB Micron Ram for about $120 U.S... Anybody have nasty memories of Micron Ram??? (Ohhh... the pun!)

Only buy certified Apple compatible RAM (but not from Apple wink.gif

There's much more to RAM than the usual few specs, and same chips on the paper may not behave at all the same way in your mac.

Last time I had to buy some (there was a real price difference) I went PC on 2nd hand chips, and I had to buy 4 chips to have the 2 working I needed (I sold the other 2 to happy PC users)

Save time, buy certified. cool.gif

i'm going with micron. the store is respectable and they've never had any complaints from mac users. i'll be sure to keep y'all posted whether or not micron should be blacklisted.

Thanks for all your help!

I've got a mix of 1gb Viking DDR, and the stock 256mb stick that came with my MDD DP1.25-is it a bad idea to mix manufactures on one system? Do you think Viking makes quality memory?
