Hello. I'm having trouble figuring out why I can run sound through firewire that's coming from iTunes or any other program that outputs audio, but not from software sequencers. My setup includes an 828mkII, MTP AV, and an XP-80 and I'm running Reason and Live on a G4 laptop. I want to be able to send sequences or sessions from the programs through the firewire instead of the 1/8" output (which would take up two more of the inputs on the 828), so I changed the coreaudio default input, output and system output to the 828, and in both the programs set the audio card and/or outputs and inputs to the 828. The built in audio card seems to work just fine, so I know the programs are working because I can listen through the analog output on the laptop, but when I have things set to the 828 I get some nasty high pitched business coming out of my monitors. I swear I had both live and reason working through the firewire once before. Am I forgetting some major detail? Can anybody shed light on this problem? I'd greatly appreciate some insight. Thanks.

hello,
when you set up your unit via Live's preferences, what are you assigning as your main output and preview channels? the 828mKII has a slightly skewed i/o map which totally confused me at first. basically, tracks 3-4 on your mkII correspond with tracks 1-2 in Live, and so on... so if you want to hear something out of tracks 1-2 on your motu, assign them to the 3-4 output in Live.... hope this helps. |

Thanks for your reply. I just spent about half an hour on the phone with MOTU and they didn't seem to know why things wouldn't work for me...the only solution they could come up with is that maybe because demo versions of programs (like the Reason and Live I'm using) ouput lower sound quality than the full blown versions that maybe it wasn't making its way through the firewire. ???? I went into Live's preferences but never found a section that pertained to channels or selected tracks for listening. Maybe demo preferences are limited? or maybe I just missed it. I reinstalled all my drivers for the software and the 828 and I'm still getting a nasty screeching noise. Any tips?>>>they're welcome. Thanks again. P.S. While all this is going wrong I'm getting great sound out of my iTunes through the firewire so it's obviously a software thing...

I was just reading through some more posts and it sounds like Panther could be causing all of this. I'm running OSX 10.3.2. That screeching white noise that makes a hum sound like heaven? Yeah, that's what I'm getting. Any insight anyone?

I'm using Pro Tools Digi002 Rack with Panther and haven't had any prob's. I know that i HAD to get 6.2.2 and run it with Panther (cuz i have a G5), but maybe your driver's haven't been caliberated for Panther? I dunno.. i could be way off. Just a hunch.

hmmm, very strange....
the demo version of Live (are you just waiting for an 'unlock key'?) should be fully functional but with limited 'save' options. i am miffed as to why you are not getting any track options in your Live audio preferences. try this: skip the audio/midi setup utility. leave those settings at their default core audio positions, and configure the 828 within Live *only*. at the very least you should have 1-2 thru 21-22 available as outputs in Live's audio preferences. perhaps you need to re-install Live. do you have any other audio apps (other than Reason) that you could test this out on? did you install audio desk? it comes free with the mkII, so if anything, try it. it would be a really good place to ensure that all of your channels are available and that the noisy artifacts that you are getting aren't a result of bad units or software. plus Audiodesk is specifically designed for the mkII:) best of luck, erik |
