Hey, I'm trying to connect a synthesizer to an iMac and am not sure what\where to get the connectors I need.
I have a Generation 3 iMac, with 64 MB, running with OS 9.1. I'm looking for a splitter/firewire adapter that will join the midi cables (both directions) to and from the firewire connector, and finally the actual midi cables to connect a synthesizer to the system ... if anyone could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Rick Termath Yukon Dept of Education |

You must have come from PC.
You need a USB MIDI interface : MIDIMan, MOTU, Ematic..and two MIDI cables. You also need to install OMS or FreeMIDI to be a traffic cop in the Mac. Then a music software to make noise. But 64 MB of RAM!!! |

rick,
I just want to add that the midi in/out is a much easier setup in Mac OS X. The CoreAudio makes it true plug and play. I am using a USB MidiMate XP, this has the two midi cables at one end and the USB on the other. it was $40 from tigerdirect.com click here to see photos the product But this product only works in OS X. M-Audio probably has a product for OS 9. www.m-audio.com As far as firewire is concerned, I don't think you will find to many reasonably priced 16 channel firewire midi inputs. I mean I only think they exist on more complicated audio units like the M-Audio Firewire 410 ($400) or MOTU 828mkII ($800). Good Luck, by the way what app are you planning on using with your midi input? -------------------- Ableton Live 4.1
