I'm planning to record demos and live performances and now that iBooks come with a G4 and are cheaper than PowerBooks I've considered to buy one. I only need it to record (no more than 16 tracks at a time, normally I'll record 8 tracks), for mixing and editing I'll use a PowerMac G4 1'25GHz I own.

Is an iBook enogh for recording purposes? (Note: I'll use either a Digi002 or a Motu 896, with independent Focusrite pre's)

Thanks a lot.

According to Digidesign's website, the G4 iBooks are approved for use with the Digi 002. You wil need to record to an external Firewire drive, as you would only be able to recors a couple tracks to the internal startup drive before overloading it. I don't know what MOTU says about that machine, but I imagine it presents a very similar load to the iBook, so it would probably work fine with that interface as well.

i have an ibook g3, i record direct to the hard drive. i have recorded an hour long set before, using emagic's emi 6|2m allowing 6 inputs dirct from the inhouse desk. i can't see a g4 being any more problematic...although an external firewire drive is highly recommended.

Having a external drive is just smart. I mayself have been looking into the iBook g4. The only thing stopping me it the absents of firewire 800. At this time that really doesn't matter, but maybe for the digi003???? As stated in MacFormat Magazine #139 Feb 2004 " the new iBook g4's are more rouged then the powerbooks." this is great if your going out and recording on set. as you more then likely will find a time when the computer hits the floor. As far as sound. I have long been a MOTU fan and use the 2408mkII with my Quicksilver and the 896 with my powerbook, but with upgrades in mind. I am looking into the digi002 rack. Digidesign was really put to rest any complaints that I had with the 001...... Good luck!!!
