So the news of the day is Steinberg will be acquired by Pinnacle Systems. You would wonder why Pinnacle Systems wants Steinberg. Is it because they wanna sell Cubase themselves? Maybe, but more likely because they want to integrate the audio technology into their own video editting products ... 5.1 surround audio, high quality 32 bit/96Khz data handling, etc ...

There are 2 other companies similar to Pinnacle (now that Pinnacle has Steinberg). Avid, who owns DigiDesign, and Apple, who owns emagic. Those 3 are the companies who own best of both [audio and video] worlds in their hands. It will be interesting to see how they compete from here on. wink.gif

What do you guys think?

Here's an excerpt from 10.2.3 release document. This may be a good news some peple here...

Audio Enhancements

* Addresses a potential issue in which sound from some USB audio devices may "stutter" after waking from sleep.
* Addresses an issue in which iSub, when used with some third-party USB speakers, could produce static.
* Improves default reverb setting for applications which use QuickTime Musical Instruments.
* Addresses an issue in which audio recorded from a USB device with a sample rate of 48k or 96k may include distortion.
* Improves results when recording from a USB microphone with a sample rate of 11.025k or 22.050k.
* Addresses an issue in which a MIDI device may unexpectedly fail to be recognized, when several devices are connected.
* Refines MIDI device support by removing compatibility for MIDI devices that are connected via a serial port (which Apple has not shipped with machines for several years).

This web page gives you a practical information we are looking for; namely how each brandnames are doing in the land of X (both hardware and software). It's a good reading in case you are considering the switch to OS X.

Okay, I bet I am not the first person to ask this question, but I am in love with OS X 10.1 and I need a multi-track audio editing solution ASAP. Aside from the fact that the multithreading actually works, the audio architecture of OS X seems very promising. So where are the softwares for me to do audio/MIDI stuff? Logic said long time ago that it will have LA5 for OS X ready by Sept, but Sept is long gone. They are aiming for January release, but I don't know if we can trust that. BIAS said it's public beta for Deck X and Peak X are ready for testing but you have to register with them and get an approval from them before download the beta and test it out. I wouldn't bet on Pro Tools, Digital Performer, or Cubase to come out anytime sooner than Logic. And I don't know any other software to do the job. So I am pretty much stuck. Everything I do can be done in OS X, except for the audio recording/editting. Well, actually, even the audio recording can be done using a shareware called Sound Studio 1.5.5 for OS X and it works very well. But when it comes to multi-track editing, I have to boot back into OS 9 and deal with OMS, FreeMIDI, ASIO, Apple Sound Manager...etc, etc, and I hate it.

Does anyone know if there's any intermediate cure for my pain?
