Hi I'm a 3d cg animator and i am in a situation that requires me to produce 5.1 surround sound to accompany some of my productions.

I would like some information about hardware and software.
Budget (1000€)
=>I would apreciate a little readiness for the future.
The station I am going to use for that is a dual 1g Pmac with 2 free PCI slots

The Monitoring system I have is a Sony str/db 1070 receiver with full 5.1 and 6.1 surround.
=digital(coax/optical)5.1/6.1 in/out
=analog 5.1/6.1 in/out
Speakersystem is SAV-E815ED (6 satelites 1 sub)

Digital Performer 3 supports surround sound. I'm doing research on DVD authoring
and here is what I know.

Your home theater setup is useless for mixing, because it can only deal with encoded audio. Consumer electronics are tuned to please the ear, reference monitors are for telling the truth.

You will be doing your mixing before you encode.

If you have MOTU hardware with DP3, routing presets already exist.

Your monitor setup would be something like this: 3 stereo amps, 5 reference monitors(not nearfield), powered sub-woofer.

Of course you need a pristine, treated room.

All of this is not cheap or practical, even on a small scale unless it's the type of work you do.

After you generate your 5.1 mix, it still needs to be encoded. DVD Studio Pro ($999) can import your mix and encode it.

You may be better renting a 5.1 mixing facility, that you can import your audio to.

A few things.
-I have DVD studio pro
The people that sold me the 'home theater setup' assured me it is a system
that is used for monitoring too.
-The 'home theater setup' has 1output and 2input connection panels with
separate connections for : central, front-left, front-right, back-left,
back-right, central-back and sub
-I noticed that I can set a signal 1000 Hz at front-left line-in and when
mesured 1000 Hz comes out of the speaker and front-left line-out.
There is an function that allows me to disable all sound manipulation
(treble, bass, virtual enhancements,etc)except amplification
-The the location i work,live and own is an old movie and sound studio, and i
have not touched the sound studio (the electronics are removed)
I think This discribes my situation a litle better
So do you think it is adequate to buy me the MOTU 828 or MIDIMAN Delta 1010 with DP3

If something still not OK Please tell me(I have raised the budget to 1700€)

( question for my son. Is it possible to give him surround sound in his games?
He has a G4 Pmac and sony DVD Dream™ system digital/analog audio in )

As long as you can route six signals, you should be alright.

Looks like you have a good room, you may wnat to get the room analyzed, to see if further treatment is needed.

I have a Sony setup at home also, think I have to pull out the manual.
I wouldn't use their speakers for critical applications.

If you buy MOTU hardware it comes with AudioDesk, basically DP3 without midi sequencing. It may be all you need.

They also have massive user groups.

I know Apple supports the SRS standard in software. But games have to be encoded for it.

I recently bought a M-Audio 410 card, to get me by until I can save for a MOTU 2408.

M-Audio's Audiphile card has what they call home theater features, what that means isn't clear to me.

You really are not that far away from a working surround system. Good luck.
