440 Forums _ Mac PowerPC _ G3 Firmware Updates?

Posted by: Synthetic Tue 16 Dec 2003, 07:24

I am a bit stumped and wondered if someone could clue me in before I spend countless hours diggin through apple.com. I bought a used G3 B/W Yosemite that came with OSX 10.2.4 as the boot system. Well I cannot get it to boot to OS9 for some reason. OS9 works in classic but this is of no use to me. I had a B/W G3 before this one and I had no problem with OS9 on it. I cannot even boot any OS9 CD.... it just hangs. But its has no problem running OSX or booting OSX CD... its current OSX.2.4 is a little buggy though.

So I was wondering if anyone know whether these mashines required a firmware update that when installing OSX.2+ that makes booting to OS9 impossible? I bought this computer to replace my OS9 music machine and without OS9 its useless to me. sad.gif

The harddrive may be formatted with the OS-X disk-tool, without the OS-9 drivers.
If so - you cant boot OS-9 from that harddrive. You will be able to run OS-9 in classic mode within OS-X.

It may also make it difficult for OS-9 to read the "wrongly" formatted OS-X disk during boot-up.

Reformat the drive with disktool but be sure to do it with drivers for OS-9.
(this erases ALL DATA on the drive of course)

thanks for the idea dixiechicken but I am not sure if that is gonna work for me. To install OS9 drivers on the HD would require using the disk-tool that comes on a OS9 disc rather than OSX disk right? There lies my problem... I cannot boot from any OS9 CD's either which leads me to think its more than just the drivers on the HD. I will look this eve though and see if there is an option to select OSX or OS9 drivers on my OSX install disk with disk-tool and hopefully I can do as you suggested and will be able to reformat with OS9 drivers cool.gif

thanks for the idea... I will post up my results tonight if I get time smile.gif

No it doesnt.

Disktool on the Panther (10.3) install CD will not let you format a HD with drivers for OS-9 - IF the machine is a OS-X bootable machine ONLY, like my flatpanel iMac.

However the Jaguar (10.2) Install CD-rom will let you format the HD with drivers for OS-9.
(checkout MacFixit right now for instance)

ahh... well hopefully my 10.1 has same option then because I don't have the 10.2 install disc.... the G3 came with 10.2.4 already installed and all i have is 10.1 from my laptop. So I will just have to try it and see what I can do tonight. Thanks again for your input as one way or another it might lead me in right direction wink.gif
