It seems like the Diamondbacks are just destined to play in less than ideal weather this season. Even getting away to Mexico City, they still could not avoid yet another game played in the rain. A light shower fell for most of this game at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú as the Diamondbacks completed a two-game series against the Padres as part of an international exposure tour. Madison Bumgarner took the mound for the Snakes, while the Padres sent 20-year-old right-hander, Luis Patino to the mound. In stark contrast to yesterday tilt, this game was filled with all sorts of action, but very little actual drama. Both starters put together acceptable lines, but nothing special. It was refreshing to see Arizona offense come through with a big game, as recent outings were starting to raise questions. The Padres managed a walk and two singles through the first two innings. They also struck out four times, which kept them from putting together any sort of threat. The Diamondbacks only managed a single, which was then erased by a double play. The Padres found their bats in the third inning Yoan Lopez Jersey. With one out, Jurickson Profar sent the first pitch of his at-bat 406 feet to center for a solo home run. He was followed by Fernando Tatis Jr who decided he liked what he saw. He too, took Bumgarner yard, giving the Padres back-to-back homers. Manny Machado never had to take the bat off his shoulder in route to walking on five pitches. Trent Grisham then singled him to second. Suddenly, it looked like the game might be gedtting away from Bumgarner. After a lengthy mound conference with Carson Kelly, Bumgarner righted the ship by getting the final two outs with only three pitches.Kelly tried to help the Diamondbacks respond by singling to lead off the Diamondbacks third, but he was erased by Nick Ahmed hitting into a double play. Bumgarner tried to get things going by walking, but Starling Marte was quietly retired.Bumgarner found his groove again in the fourth inning, needing only eight pitches to mow down the Padres in order.David Peralta led off the Diamondbacks fourth with a groundball triple by Profar into the alley in right center. Ketel Marte then took the next pitch and sent Tommy Pham sprinting to the track in left to make the out, allowing Peralta to tag up and score. Eduardo Escobar followed with a walk and then advanced to second on a single by Christian Walker. Kole Calhoun followed with a single of his own to load the bases. The pressure was visibly getting to the young Patino and he walked Carson Kelly on four pitches https://www.diamondbacksfanstore.com/59-chr...n_walker_jersey, forcing in a run. Nick Ahmed then struck out looking at a 2-2 pitch that might have been given the benefit of the doubt by Blue. That brought up Madison Bumgarner who ran the count full, putting Patino one pitch away from forcing in another run, but he got Bumgarner swinging on a delightful off-speed pitch to end the inning. It was three up and three down for both the Padres and the Diamondbacks in the fifth.A pair of one-out singles put runners on the corners for the Padres in the sixth. That brought up the bottom of the order. Franchy Cordero popped up to Marte at second base. Patino was then allowed to hit for himself, resulting in an easy strikeout for Bumgarner to end the threat.Patino made quick work of striking out Eduardo Escobar to begin the bottom of the sixth. Then, for some reason, Virtual Tingler elected to lift Patino. This seemed somewhat odd, as if Patino was not going to be allowed to pitch any deeper, it would have seemed to make more sense to pinch-hit for him in the top of the inning when there was a real scoring opportunity. However, he was passing the ball off to Emilio Pagan, a move which worked out in spades the previous afternoon. That was not to be the case on this particular afternoon. Christian Walker promptly greeted the right-handed reliever by hitting an opposite-field home run to put the Diamondbacks up by a run. Kole Calhoun then doubled on a groundball past a diving Eric Hosmer. This brought up Carson Kelly. Kelly launched a 2-2 pitch 409 feet to left center for a home run, bringing a quick end to Pagan afternoon. Trevor Megill came on in relief and restored order by retiring both Nick Ahmed and Bumgarner. After hitting for himself in the sixth, Bumgarner went back out for the seventh to face the top of San Diego lineup. A quick strikeout of Pham brought Profar to the plate. Profar lined an 0-1 pitch to center that hit off the back wall. Tatis then brought him home with a wind-assisted opposite field home run to right that just edged over the wall. It looked like Calhoun was going to make a play on the ball, but he just didn quite have the legs to get there in time. That brought an end to Bumgarner afternoon. Virtual Lovullo made the call to the bullpen and brought in lefty, Alex Young. Manny Machado greeted Young by hitting a double. He then moved to third on a groundout by Grisham. Young then struck out Hosmer to end the San Diego seventh.Trevor Megill went back out to pitch the eighth for SanDiego. Starling Marte hit a double to get things started for Arizona. David Peralta grounded out, unable to advance Marte to third. This brought up Ketel Marte. K. Marte lifted a fly into shallow right center which was fielded by Grisham, going away from the infield. This allowed S.Marte to tag and take third without a throw. This aggressive base running proved to be key https://www.diamondbacksfanstore.com/279-ma...williams_jersey, as Escobar followed by grounding a single through the 5.5 hole, allowing Marte to score from third. Christian Walker then popped up to first to end the inning. The Padres threatened again the eighth. A single by Mejia was followed by a strikeout of Franchy Cordero. This brought up Josh Naylor as a pinch-hitter. He singled, moving Mejia to second and ending Young afternoon. Junior Guerra took over on the mound for the Diamondbacks. Guerra struck out Pham swinging, then walked Profar to load the bases, bringing up the dangerous Tatis. Three pitches later, Tatis was looking for the hole in his bat as he was the victim of a swinging strikeout on a fastball on the inner third that he simply just whiffed on.The Diamondbacks went down in order in the eighth before handing the ball off to Archie Bradley to close out the ninth. Manny Machado was unwilling to make it easy on Bradley, leading the frame off with a single. Swinging strikeouts by Grisham and Hosmer brought up Mejia. After watching his teammates get eaten alive by Bradley hammer once they fell behind in the count, Mejia jumped on the first pitch he saw from Bradley and shot a single to left https://www.diamondbacksfanstore.com/260-me...ll_kelly_jersey. With runners on first and second, Franchy Cordero came to the plate. With the count 1-2, Bradley struck him out looking as he was clearly waiting back on the devastating curve Bradley had offered the others.Final Score SD 4 - AZ 6Fernando Tatis Jr. was named the player of the game, though the honor could just as easily have gone to Carson Kelly. Both were responsible for driving in three on the afternoon and Kelly work handling the pitching staff played no small part in Arizona victory.Arizona will be off again tomorrow as they head back to the States. They will be in Atlanta on Tuesday Nick Ahmed Jersey, where they will send Zac Gallen to the mound to face off against Kyle Wright and the Braves.
