I know they always give the option to turn off software monitoring for zero latency but that's not much fun is it?

thanks

Try the Echo Indigo IO. If you really do not need more inputs and outputs this card is great.

yes, the Echo card is PCMCIA.
I have no experiences with the very cheap soundcards on the market, but I can recommend the Edirol FA-66. Very good latency and no driver problems.

Thanks very much but that's way too expensive - looking for something a kid can plug his guitar into Garage Band only (no pre-amps needed).

thanks for your help though

Try something like this: http://nav.440network.com/out.php?mmsc=forums&url=http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/JamLab-main.html $80

or: http://nav.440network.com/out.php?mmsc=forums&url=http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/garageband_cables/ $25

or: http://nav.440network.com/out.php?mmsc=forums&url=http://www.dvforge.com/plug.shtml $40

Good Luck,
