On December 5th, http://www.macmusic.org/news/viewnews.php/lang/EN/id/273 that MacMusic would be closing in the near future. This brought on an important mobilization and every solution was analyzed in order to consider the survival of your site.

We presently know that neither advertising - at least for now - nor a request for 'charitable' donations would ensure the continuity of the site. Its future rests upon users motivation: for this reason, a fee will now be a charged for prolonged access to MacMusic.

In order to do so, a method similar to shareware will be put into place very shortly which is a first for an Internet site. The procedure is simple enough: access to MacMusic contents will always be available to all but surfing will progressively and more intensively be reduced for non 'Active Members'. New visitors will have the chance to get to know the site well enough to decide if they want to join our community. The authorized number of pages will of course be globally accounted for before the slowing down no matter how many times someone has visited the site. Once you become an 'Active Member', you can resume normal surfing and even choose not to show avertising banners.

The annual price is based on that of monthly magazines although our information is offered on a daily basis and that the proposed services have nothing in common with those of the written press... The level of interactivity between readers is also not quite the same ;-)
Unlimited access to MacMusic has therefore been established at $60 a year for 'Active Members' (individuals) and at $100 for 'Active Corporate' (businesses).

Another feature enables you to access the status progressively if you can't do otherwise. In that case, you only need to gain MacMusic points up and until the amount of the annual price is reached. You can obtain these points by either buying them by unit (1 point = 1 $), or by making a contribution (articles, news, translations, links...) for which the number of points will be shown online soon. You can also mix the two ways if you wish.

Finally, if you are an unwavering supporter of MacMusic and have the means, you can contribute even more by paying a larger amount than the established fee thus giving a more important support to your site. In that case, you can purchase points in advance that can be exchanged for new services soon to be announced. Let us keep in mind that this is the community spirit that has made MacMusic the first site on the planet dedicated to your world.

So, are you ready to save MacMusic from being unjustly terminated in the very near future?

For about 24 hours the "brakes" are on. sad.gif

They are set accordingly to your total number of pages viewed from the start on macmusic. It's not the number of pages from the begnining of the session, but from your day 1 on MM. It affects only the non-active members. You can either become one or decide to contribute in the alternative possible ways (points, news, links, articles…). A LOT of people take this site for granted as it is build from the contribution from a lot of people from all over the world. It is not to be taken for granted. From this very month, MM MUST be financialy self sufficient and pay its server at least.

Too many want only to take, few at this hour have decided to give, either their time, their knowledge or their money. And as we have seen from a few days now, these are usually the same ones.

Also access to all MM is still open, a newbie can come and ask and find answers. but the people who are coming day after day have to help us save we'll have to shut down.

THERE IS A BUG!

Right now the maximum level of "brakes" between 2 pages should be of 2, we reduced it today to 2. But it occurs that a loop of brakes can happen.

If you use Safari, switch to an other browser (here the browser is the bug).
On other browsers (like explorer) the loop can occur. It seems to be forum related (most of the code in the forums are not ours) but we can't reproduce it. Soif the webmaster is searching for its cause.

If you are stuck in a loop, use the become active member link you'll jump out of it. You can also say a little hello at Kagi for us while you're there, as it is the best way to avoid the bug wink.gif laugh.gif

I noticed that www.osxaudio.com are having similar problems to MacMusic - check out the front page of their website, top right-hand corner.

A LOT of sites have troubles, OSXaudio at the moment is still buying a mac. After they'll have to pay the rent wink.gif A lot of other sites have mailed us very kindly their support, their available help if needed, a little place to be if needed with them. But unfortunately we are already too big for the available solutions sad.gif so:

We are on the rent edge now.

No rent, no server sad.gif

For the ones who can't or don't want to pay their active member account (we know it can be a problem for some, even a lot of people) the way to contribute and win active member points is clearly explained http://www.macmusic.org/about/contrib.php?lang=EN

Well Well Well

It's not a funny thing to say (well… write…) but the server is on his knees. Right now we can only pay (and I'm talking only of paying the server) about 5-6 months of it. Time is ripe to change for a bigger one, because we are on the limit all the time and the server crashes hard (2 really big ones in the last week).

The only way not to restrain more the access (right now, only Active Members have access when more than 200 people are connected) it's no more preventively sufficient as troubles begin to occur at 180. To move to a new server appropriate takes time and money. We won't begin that migration before a year of server is secure. before that, we'll have to restrict the access more certainly only to spare us crashes.

The only way to keep an access as free as possible is that more people become Active Members, Active Corporate or Supporters (supporters begin at 11$). At this very moment, almost all the AM are from the FRrench part of the site or even teamers. Don't tell me that the ENglish members don't like the site enough not to support it? blink.gif

We are still working on means to beef up the incoming money without asking to members, but it takes time and work. Meanwhile, every single supporter is a step to a better MM experience and we'll have in the next days to take mesures to cope with the trouble at hand sad.gif

Do you want to be MM experienced? blink.gif wink.gif laugh.gif

biggrin.gif Hi to all our nice english speaking members and visitors, it seems that the message concerning the urgent need of your support for the new server of Mac Music, start to be understood as well on the french side, but the goal is not yet reached huh.gif

So please go and make a contribution to Mac Music, don't forget that you will receive as a welcome gift the MM Cd (a nice compilation of our artists members).

The best of all, you will still be able to connect to Mac Music and by having the status of "Active Member" you won't get anymore this slowing down pages and warning messages rolleyes.gif

Let's get together! don't forget that we are a community and that the team and the Webmaster is maintaining this site for the pleasure of sharing the love of the Mac platform wink.gif (Beleive it or not but they don't earn a penny at the contrary it cost them MONEY!)

Together we are stronger and can solve our problems with mutual understanding and happiness
