I am in the market for a USB interface that will work for OSX. I am looking for OPTICAL IN and OUT and hopefully MIDI IN and OUT. I want it to work with an ASIO driver so it works for CUBASE SX. Can Anyone help me?
Thanks, Jay |

Have a look at the Tascam US-428. Seems to have what you're looking for plus a few extras: S/PDIF, audio, and MIDI interface - working OSX driver and the control surface should integrate well with Cubase SX.

The problem with that is that I own a Fostex FD-8 Digital Multitracker that records on an external disk drive (Zip). I want to find a way to use this as the mixing consol. It has digital ins and outs (optical and coaxial) and midi, so I figure that I could just buy a converter. Its not as easy as that though. Everything I look at either doesn't have ASIO drivers or doesn't have optical in (only out) or something...
Have any other suggestions... Thanks Jay |

Oops, sorry - forgot about the "optical" part. I assume you've already looked at the Event's EZbus, which seems to be a good choice except for the ASIO thing. Looks like you might have to wait, but according to Event, there is hope. Unless someone else has a better answer?

Get the new MOTU 828mkII.
It's got the optical in/out and MIDI I/O, and 8 analog ins & outs. I own the MOTU 828 (original model) and it's great. The new one, the mark II, adds MIDI I/O and 96k quality. Woo-hoo! Plus more cool features. MOTU is the only brand I would trust for cutting-edge features for MIDI and audio in conjunction with OS X. I use DP4 with the MOTU 828 and the MOTU MIDITimepiece AV USB MIDI interface. Here's the MOTU 828mkII: http://motu.com/english/motuaudio/828/body.html Later, tater. |
