Tascam Us-122, works only in classic Options

I've been following this forum on and off trying to find what fit my budget etc. Today I got a ride to a music store (I have poor vision) and bought the tascam usb unit. I was just going to get a midi interface Midisport but this seemed to have all I needed to 'jump up' from direct recording mic to mixer to /1/4/out to 1/8 input on my g4 tower using Audacity. The connection on the back of the computer wasn't very good with the long adapter.

I couldn't get the Tascam installed. Cubase seemed to work only in Classic and wouldn't recognize the US-122. The extra software that came with the unit was WIN only. I can read a manual but just couldn't get the unit to send out, using audacity with preferences changed. I used Midi in and Mic in. I couldn't get anything through the headphones either. I downloaded new drivers from Steinberg but then Cubase wouldn't go at all.

Reading the reviews at zzsounds makes me wish I had waited for the new MAc firewire, but searching through the archives this unit gets pretty good notices.

I'm in the same boat, please help me also. I can not get my G3 OSX to recognize the US-122, it says it is not available. The unit is on because the phantom power switch will light up. Cubase does not see it either. HELP!

first things first (standard general troubleshooting for poor souls)

- Have you installed the latest drivers?
- Have you repaired permissions using Apple Disk Utility?
- Does the unit show up in both the audio pannel in system preferences and in Audio MIDI Setup?

If the software your unit came with is called Cubasis LE, it's old and does not run in OSX. Tascam now includes what they're calling Cubase LE with their interfaces, which is now OSX-compatible. Thanks xingu, that was the problem, Unfortunately, or fortunately, I returned the unit a few weeks ago.

I'm still waiting for Asteroid or someother FW. The Motu 828 seems like overkill, I shouldn't need more than two channels 95% of the time.

I keep reading references to SPDIF? (from reading a review of the EdirolUA25)

You might want to look at M-Audio's Firewire Audiophile - here.
But I'd check around the forums to see how this unit gets along with other people... M-Audio seems to have a reputation for sketchy drivers in these parts. (I recall reading about problems with their Firewire 410, but maybe things have been solved by now...)
SPDIF is for digital i/o.
By the way, if you won't be using more than 2 channels 95% of the time, a USB interface should handle everything just fine.

I've recently bought an Edirol FA-101 which seems to integrate well into OSX generally. They've just brought out the FA-66 too, which is cheaper (& actually would have suited my needs fine as I don't need huge numbers of in/outputs), & might suit you well? Certainly the 101 has been glitch-free in operation so far, & sounds very good; very clear (using mainly with logic, running on a g4 powerbook).

ps. I considered the m-audio one too, but had heard dubious things about their drivers & audio glitches etc., so decided to get the Edirol instead.
