440 Forums _ Monitoring _ Amplifiers For Passive Monitors

Posted by: beauty_speed Sun 14 May 2006, 23:33

hello all

i am considering the ADAM passive monitors ANF-10, mainly because they cost far less than a pair of P-11 active ones. I have listened to both the P-11 and the Genelec 8030A, and despite a variety of brands/models in this category (KRK, Event, M-Audio,Tannoy,even Dynaudio...) I believe these two are on a class of their own regarding sound quality, even if they are very different sounding speakers.

my doubt is how much will I have to pay for a decent power amplifier and what are the suggested brand/models, since I´m new to the whole passive monitors concept...

also I will use them for film post-production as well as music, so if there´s anyone outthere working on film sound I would welcome any specific input regarding this area.

Thanks for any suggestions and opinions.

Try Yamaha. I had two weeks with them recently and I was very impressed. I don't know if they're the best or not, but its a good place to start.

Hi,
I can highly recommend the Alesis RA range of amplifiers if you're on a budget. I've been using an Alesis RA300 to power my Dynaudio BM5 and am very happy with this setup.

Other manufacturers of Amplifiers for passive studio monitors you might want to consider are Crown, Hafler, Samson, QSC, Yamaha, Mackie etc etc.

Just make sure they are fanless, have enough power (c.a. 2x as much as what your monitors are rated for) and don't hum.

Hope this helps.
