So here's the deal:
G4 350 - 10.2.6 - DP 4.1 - Midisport 2x2 - Nord Lead 3 OS 1.04 I'm trying to get Midi set up with the Nord, and DP lets me record, but it won't play back. I think the problem is not with any Nord settings because the Midisport's midi out lights are not flashing during the playback. I also think I used the Midi setup utility right. It automatically recognized the Midisport, and then I told it I also had a Nord. I tried to use the connectors in the application to connect to the two, but they didn't seem to do anything. In DP, the every midi output is set to a Nord device group, to no effect. So, basically, I'm hoping there's some very simple setting in DP or Midi setup that I'm missing. Any ideas? Thanks to all Will |

when using a midi hub (midisport 2x2), when setting up midi when it recognizes the midisport, it should go on to ask what is hooked up to the 2 available ports... is this where you told you midi setup (studio) the nord is?

No, it never asked me. It just recognized the Midisport and made a little icon for it. Then I clicked on new device in the toolbar, and made the Nord. And like I said, the two won't connect with the little lines you can draw.

Hmmmmmmm, From what I understand core midi is actually OMS.. Apple even hired the guy responsible for OMS... Having said that you need to set up your nord on the 2x2 side of things... I forget how it is done in OMS, try double clicking on the 2x2 icon and see what happens. Usually when you mac locates the 2x2, you press OK, or contunue or something positive like that, then it will search for midi devices hooked up to the 2x2.....should show all ports, with the 2x2 showing the 2 ports it has with an icon like a keyboard with a ? or an actual nord icon. If this is not happining make sure your midi connections are correct. in to out, out to in. Also make sure everything has power (nord) and if your are using a USB hub (can be problematic when it comes to midi.. especially the 2x2) is powered. To me, selecting new device is telling the mac that there is yet another midi connection (other than the 2x2)

Maybe a silly question, but do you have the MIDI track for the Nord on DP "play enabled"? That is, with the blue triangle lit next to the track. The recorded track will not playback or show MIDI output without this. If you're a veteran user, forgive me for asking. Sometimes the simplest solutions begat a bevy of complex answers.
Question: Do you see recorded MIDI data on screen, like in the graphic edit window? |

Very good question, yes the track is play enabled, although when I first started, it wasn't. It seems odd that isn't enabled by default, but whatever, now I know. And yes, the recording is definitely working, I can see the midi data on the track. I'm not in front of it right now, but when I get home, I'm going to try to do the midi setup again from scratch, and I'll let you know how it works out.
Thanks all |

All, right, the plot thins:
I cleared all of the devices out of Midi setup. Plugged the midisport straight into the g4. Out and in plugs are correct. Told midi setup to scan for devices, once again, found the midisport, double clicking on the midisport icon brings up a seemingly unhelpful dialogue shown here: Then manually adding the nord and starting up DP produces the same results. It will record (midisport midi-in light flashes and notes appear on track), but will not play back (nord does nothing, midisport midi-out light does nothing). I don't know, I'm out of ideas. |

Unc-
On the screen you sent, did you enable the MIDI channel numbers, the little squares? The screen you show has NO MIDI channels selected. You have to click on each square , 1-16 MIDI transmit and 1-16 MIDI receive (as well as check MIDI Time Code if needed). If these MIDI channel squares are not enabled, you won't get MIDI to your devices. Hope that helps. If you have enabled these already, looks like the problem is elsewhere. Later. |

You're right, they weren't enabled, but I had messed around with enabling them before with no effect. Also, it records fine without me touching those settings. I tried enabling them just now, still nothing. I also switched to the midi in and out B ports on the midiman instead of the A ports. Same - record, no playback. This is tough. Anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks again |

How about the MIDI Patch Thru?
Is it on Auto Channelize? It should be. I'm just trying to think of anything that would keep you from hearing playback of MIDI tracks. One other thing to check: Make sure your MIDI setting on the Nord is set to receive MIDI instead of in "Local" mode. It should be in a MIDI menu or master setup menu there somewhere on the Nord that let's you select Receive MIDI or Local only... which you would have had to record the Nord track with it on MIDI receive, then switched it (by accident) to Local so it couldn't play back the recorded MIDI data. This probably didn't happen to you. Another thing -- you DO have a MIDI cable going MIDI OUT of the MIDISport going to MIDI IN on the Nord, I trust. Some folks starting out think you just need one MIDI cable. Need 'em both, of course. Dunno, bro. Befuddled. |
