Take a look at the second hand market. Second hand hardware samplers are selling ridiculously cheap, since everyone's moving over to software. You say you're not looking for "top of the line stuff", but you could actually find a top of the line Akai sampler (or some other sampler) for a very reasonable price.

Take a look at the EMU line of samplers as well. They have for a long time enjoyed a solid reputation.
Second hand gear may not set you back as much as you think.
