I'm trying to use OMS 2.3.8 and am having trouble getting sound from the Quicktime extensions in OS 9.1.  I'm using OMS to play music scores from the Nightingale 3.0 notation program.  It all works on my old Mac (running 8.1) but though Nightingale works on my newer Mac I can't get my scores to play from the built-in speakers.  I don't use the program more than 2 or 3 times a year so I kinda hate to buy the latest version (US $89).  Any drivers or clues someone can suggest?

System wise, how have you installed the 9.1 ? Is it an upgrade from 9.04 or a brand new install of the system. if it's the upgrade, it can be that. A system upgraded to 9.1 can behave strangely.

I suppose you know how to use OMS wink.gif so if it's nightingale… but I don't know this program and as I should go to bed maybe there's something obvious that I'm missing.

now sleeeeeeeep smile.gif

I'm a newbie, but don't get me started on OMS - nasty little piece of code.
Try downgrading to 2.3.7, get rid of any FreeMIDI folders and extensions, apparently the two don't get along, I don't intend to patronise you; but have you clicked on the Test Studio drop-down menu at the top of the screen: you get a little 1/8 note that appears over the synth device - click that and big earblasting avant-garde noise is produced, and also in test studio mode you tap keys on the synth and get a nice young lass telling you the MIDI has been received...
Alternately, restart you computer half a dozen times, OMS seems to like that a lot; or start a hate-mail petition for the design team behind OMS. ie: my name is...., and I would like to see a mac-friendly version of OMS that works like the rest of my mac software, instead of being impossible to understand, lacking proper documentation and acting a heckuvalot like W___dows, grrrrrrrr.

Hope that's helped.

Ash

Don't petition… it's no use, the design team doesn't work anymore for 2 years now, as Opcode has been phagocyted by fender (if I remember well). The guy behind OMS (crappy 68K code) is now an happy Apple developper in charge of MIDI in OS X… Don't dream of an update, there won't be. The code hasn't been fred by Opcode or Fender.

And with me OMS 2.3.8 and Freemidi live happily (quite) together.

I'll have a look at the system first, with a clean install of all things midi. (anyway if someone else has an idea…)

Oh I forgot, try upgrading your quicktime version!

I found I had two problems in OMS: Quicktime Musical Inst was turned off (had a red circle w/line icon over it) and when I fixed that it turned out there were two other items in the OMS setup that it felt needed to be there. I Cleared those others and with only the QT in the profile THEN Nightingale was able to use the built in speakers of my Mac to play its music scores!! If you have any interest in a terrific notation program I recommend Nightingale or the free version NightLight. Get either and documentation at ngale.com
Thanks for your suggestions!

I'll check this nightingale thing… my past as a classical music pupil drools of scores…

Happy to see you found the origin of the trouble. Just to be clear for others : hox have you turned it back on ? In the quicktime setup ?

To turn QT Musical Instruments on in OMS you run a small application that came with OMS called OMS Setup. It churns around and selects which external and internal ports it thinks it can interact with. After it's made a selection you are able to highlight each item and troubleshoot. Initially mine showed QT Music with a crossed-out red circle through it. Clicking directly on the red circle brings up a dialogue box that gives you the option of turning the synthesizer ON. Once you've done that and closed that window the red circle will be gone from the QT Music on the available items listing. In my case I found I had to also Clear two other items that OMS thought it wanted to interact with, THEN my Nightingale software was able to use OMS to play scores using the built-in speakers on my Mac. Hope I've described this more clearly this time.

High and clear captain! wink.gif

I've never encountered a synth 'off' in OMS… and as I don't use the quicktime synth…

Now we are a bit less stupid here wink.gif

(well, there's still some work…) wink.gif
