Rewire Continued
Here is what I’ve found so far about the Rewire capabilities of Cubase SX: it works great...the second time. In my first post under this thread I mentioned that there was an apparent problem in playing Reason through Cubase. Seemingly random CPU spikes would create audio glitches, little clicks and pops. So after straightening out my audio track difficuties, and as a result reducing the CPU load (see my second post), I was curious as to whether the Rewire problem would still be there. The Rewire problem was reduced. In fact, the only time glitches occurred was when Reason hit points in the song where the instrumentation became a bit more complex and the CPU demand was a little higher (in this particular song it occured twice). However, and this is the weird part, it only happened the first time I played through the song. The second time I played the song it performed flawlessly. The glitches did not reappear. This is reproducable on my machine. If I quit Reason & Cubase, and then restart them and play the song for the first time, the glitches appear. But on subsequent run-throughs the song plays just fine and sounds great, and will do so until I quit the programs. So what was a major headache becomes a minor annoyance. In my early experience Rewire is completely useable in Cubase SX, as long as you play through the song once to “iron out the wrinkles.” Will this solution work for everyone? Who knows. The cubase.net forums have several reports about other users having similar problems with CPU spikes, and no one seems quite sure what causes it. After experimenting with it for a little while, Cubase SX appears to run well enough that I can now work entirely in OSX. Music production was the final thing to keep me booting into OS9, but it now looks like Classic’s days are numbered on my machine. |
