Hello!

I'm the guy with the Quad. I haven't disappeared. I've just been going through Quad Hell.

Short version of the story: I bought a Maxtor TB drive that was also from Hell. Eventually, it gave up the ghost and I returned its smoking, dead hulk back to CompUSA for a replacement. I got a LaCie FW drive that I just hooked up, so as soon as I put it through the paces, I'll let you know if I have any better luck. Right now, my Quad G5 (pre-Intel) is a crawling, sluggish beast. My 3-year-old G4 Laptop leaves it in the dust. How about that?

So far, I don't like Quad World. I'm feeling like I made a $4000 mistake.

Oh, I also had a bad RAM stick in the machine. That was also wreaking havoc.

More later!

hahaworld... Sorry to hear your terrible news. I feel you. It hurts. Can we do something? Send letters to Macintosh from Mac Forum? I remember when you got your Quad. I was inspired and motivated by your purchase and you called it: "Smooth". Then all went quiet... Your Report is very disturbing. I know that you are a Dedicated Mac User and made the purchase expecting great things. Did you 'Set-Up' the Quad or was it done by Mac or a Professional Music Retailer? Will Mac Replace? Please keep us informed.

Hi Mac Daddy,

No. There is something wrong. Maybe its the August vacation in Europe.

By the way I am using Virtual Guitarist 2 and the VG files should be in: Applications> Library>Aplication Support>Virtual Guitarist 2 Content. In the Virtual Guitarist 2 Content is a file called "Set VG2 Content Location". This file tells VG2 where the files are. (see this file content below below).

Virtual Guitarist 2.dat1
Virtual Guitarist 2.dat4
Virtual Guitarist 2.dat5
Virtual Guitarist 2.dat2
User Styles
User Effects
Virtual Guitarist 2.dat3
Set VG2 Content Location
Virtual Guitarist 2.dat6

I had the previouse version of VG and the file setup was the same. Hope this helps.

Hello, friends!

Thanks for the kind words. I will definitely keep you posted. I bought the Quad from an official Apple rep. at CompUSA. The only things I added that weren't in-the-box were extra RAM and a bluetooth/wireless upgrade (upgrade? That's another thing that made me angry. Who doesn't want bluetooth and wireless capability nowadays? I had to pay an extra $200 to have that installed on a computer that was already almost $4000). Anyway, I really don't mind to pay a lot for something if it's going to work as advertised. I'm slowly finding out things about the Quad, so I probably should have done more research before I bought the thing. My thinking was that I wanted to get the last and best pre-Intel desktop, because usually the last model before a serious overhaul is typically the best from my experience. I wasn't ready to move into the Intel world just yet. Maybe in about 3 or 4 years. I've always had great experiences with LaCie drives, so we'll see.

Thanks again for keeping in touch! I will definitely try to send regular updates to the forum here. Right now, all I can say is don't buy Maxtor hard drives. That thing was definitely a lemon.

actually, i have 3 customers that bought multiple G5 quads without bluetooth and airport. One customer saved ~ $4000 by not paying for something they don't need.
