I've just started to use my new imac, gargageband 2, and wondered if anybody could help me attach a pair of powered monitors. The imac help says plug external speakers into the usb point and then select the speaker type . Not so easy when the monitors have 1/4 inch jacks!!

get a cheap Audio interface/ if its just for connecting speakers then you could get a cheap monitering hardware product or a cheap mixer ... but if your using garage band and doing the music get a small audio interface dude...

Heaps out there .....

Just make sure its Drivers are compatible with your system cause its useless without a good driver..

Presonus - FIrebox http://www.presonus.com/firebox.html (firewire)
Digidesign,- Mbox
check out Motu.com there interfaces are good

lots of others but the presonus one is small and later on if you wanna record vocals guitar bass etc you can but if you want more later on ( think about how many ins/outs you need).

good luck mate from Australia

You don't have a headphones out? It's the one usually used for direct multimedia speakers. Then a 1/8 TRS to 2 1/4" TS adapter and up you go. For serious monitoring though, a proper interface is noticeably better.

I plug mine into the headphone jack - seems to work ok.
If you get a splitter jack you can reduce your i/4 jack to fit.
