 Upgrading My Powerbook, ram memory |

Hi guys ,
I bought my powerbook 15 days ago and i am really pleased by its performance.Currently i am using logic pro 7.0 with few plug-ins but i am going to install some really "heavy" ones and i was thinking of upgrading it from 512mb of ram to 1.5 by buying a 1 gig stick.Actually i didn't buy the ram from apple because many people told me that i could upgrade it by myself saving much money.Can you tell me what kind of ram memory do i have to buy(DDR SDRAM ?) and if there is something like a manual showing how to open the pb and put the stick inside(i think that i had found a pdf but i am not sure) Thank you for everything ! |

It depends on the model you have. If you have the new model that just came out (1.67ghz) You will probably need to look for the DDR2 PC2-4200 SDRAM
Before you buy the ram check in your users manual. |

Hi,
I also bought the powerbook G4 17" a few months back. I have installed Logic express 7 (upgraded to 7.1.1). I have also put in DDR RAM - 1 GIG and now it is 1.5 GIG. Putting RAM inside is simple. the slot is behind the battery. But the thing is that we have to be carefull in inserting the RAM, as the pins are very fragile and one may damage them if inserted wrongly. The best thing is to go to any apple recognised stores who have technicians to do the same for you for no cost. As of now, things are working just fine. I really have to try and drive the machine harder, as I am still in the learning process of the software. (I was using PC and Cakepro/Sonar since about 12 years now). I feel it is little cumbersome (compared to Cakepro - especially if you are using built in software instruments) in this software, but perhaps one gets used to all these as time goes by. Narayanan |

hi,
The manual that comes along with the computer clearly describes how to add additional RAM. (Page 57 onwards). They also have notified as to what type of RAM is to be bought, with model number etc. Of course this is for Powerbook G4 17". But the 15" thing should not be very different, as the computer design is more or less the same. If in doubt, you may get hold of a manual of G4 17" and have a good look at. Not sure which PB you have from the posts below. On the 15" G4 Aluminum PowerBook there is a RAM access door on the middle rear of the computer. There are two RAM slots behind this door (accessed by 4 #0 phillips head screws). A maximum of 2GB of RAM can be installed (2x 1GB RAM SODIMMs). I have had great luck with Memory X for spec, price, reliability and service. The site will guide you to the appropriate RAM module for any computer you may need additional memory for. I have used this site for about 20 different computers ranging from a Biege G3 desktop to a new PowerMac G5 (including some PCs as well) for myself, my friends and family. Since I am the tech guy for many of my friends and family I like to make sure that I won't have to spend too much time supporting them. Good site, good prices. I have the latest powerbook that came out. 17 inch with 1680x1050 resolution 1.67 ghz 120gb hard disk etc. Thanks a lot for the information ! |

Looks like MemoryX has a sale on the RAM for your PBook. 1GB of OEM RAM (Original Equipment Manufacturer' Spec) for $160 (normally $300) or an equivalent 1GB RAM for $120. Not too bad either way for an additional GB of memory. Have fun! peace, deacon -------------------- |
