Hi...

I am total rookie as for the Apple architecture. I have been using PC for many years. My main interst is Logic 7 and some initial steps with video post. I have bought YAMAHA SW1000XG few years ago and it worked quite on my PC.

One of my firends is selling Power Mac G5 1.6 with 768 RM , 80 SATA Drive and GFX5200. She wants to be paid 800 euro (apporx. 1050$) for this machine...

To be honest I do not know what to do ... Shall I buy this mac and upgrade it with some additional stuff (RAM) and it would run desired software Logic 7 or wait , be calm and wait for the prices of Dual 1.8 G5 go down ?

Help me please, (as I have netioned I have got spare parts that could be put directly into the mac to make it 2GB and xtra 300 maxtor 7200 rpm SATA HDD) ?

Would the SW1000XG improved overall system performance in apps like Logic or for example Garrage Band ?

Thanx!

I'd go for it wink.gif

It's cheap, and you have roughly a double G4 1,25 equivalent wink.gif More than enough to start with. be very cautious with the RAM, G5 are very picky on it. If it doesn't behave normally check without the added RAM first.

For the SATA HD, no problemo (save Maxtor is noisier than other manufacturers).

About the SW1000XG, it's OS 8 and 9 only, so, so long the yam' wink.gif

I have a G5 mono 1,8 and it's a wonderful computer, I hope you'll enjoy yourself as I do.
(no, apple didn't gave it to me unsure.gif

For the RAM, it'll be a trial/error thing, install by paris, see if there's something fishy but first have a few days without the added RAM to know if everything runs OK. run the install CD and check the system drive is ok, I'd format eventually partition and install the system from scratch to be sure evrything is kosher. Install your apps (rememebr to first things first : repair permissions with Apple drive utility), live a little with it. Then do the tests.

Unsuitable memory would induce errors, crash, strange behaviour (kernel panics, trouble on start up)… wink.gif

Hmm...

Cool...

Now ! I have to start negotaiations with her ... I am really fed up with Windows XP. I love the way OSX looks and also behaves. It is exceptional. There are also some nice tools for math and stuff that I normaly use in lab smile.gif

Nevertheless, thanks for advice...

Best wishes!

Kamil
