Eeerrrh!! I have a G4 (I will be getting a G5 soon...and Logic Pro 7) I also have 2 Hyper thread 3 ghz computers running an optimized version of XP...I have to say they kick serious arse!! Windows is a bit more finicky to set up, but XP is as stable as a rock and opens windows much faster than a MAc. I can run Logic 5.5 with tons of plugs and tracks...no problem at all. I am really looking forward to getting a G5...but I sincerely hope I dont get the Mac evangalist sickness that some users seem to have...its rather sickening. Sort of like a bunch of born again Christians. Astro

Actually I just had to reply to this
Of course, my powerbook is shadowed by my friend's 3.2 ghz Pentium 4 tower with a gig of RAM, Radeon 9800 pro, Soundblaster audigy 2 pro etc. Whatever, he likes his as the entertainment machine but he has fiddled with music from time to time. I once had this piano sample that was a gigabyte in size.
Really!!
My powerbook with 512 struggled a lot with it, but played it, his computer barely played it even with double the memory.
Sounds like your friend has absolutley no idea how to set up a computer for audio on the PC...this is a huge wank!! I run loads of large samples at the same time on a 2.8 ghz hyperthread...in fact Steinberg grand, heavy duty samples in EXS 24 and lots of stuff in Kontakt as well, atmosphere, trilogy...you name it. I am currently mastering a symphonic style track that is using bucketloads of automation, loads of tracks...nearly 90 (not all at once of course) and plenty of samples and VST instruments as well. T his is on Logic 5.5...NO PROBLEM AT ALL!! Actually BTW setting up a PC for Audio is pretty darn simple...so I have to assume you got your computer science degree in a Frickin raffle!!

Please, I'd like people on the flame verge to actually register. If you find threads interesting enough to anwser into, then you can have a proper name here. It's easy to heat up when in anonymity. Mind also that Macmusic actually was the one and only site/commentator to question Apple test, as I have written before, because some of the respected members and also teamer have also PCs around and know a thing or two about the possibilities. Apple test was wronged in some way. Trouble is: which one? For the flame part… have you really to tune your mac for audio? (save drives and RAM of course)

QUOTE (Guest @ Oct 8 2004, 10:56) Actually BTW setting up a PC for Audio is pretty darn simple...so I have to assume you got your computer science degree in a Frickin raffle!! Geez. So much for netiquette. I guess I won't be tuning into these wars I again. No, the computer science degree was not a 'Frickin raffle' and as a matter of fact it's one of the better places in the U.S, but I digress. No, neither the PC nor the Mac was set-up for audio, I was just commenting on the general design to start with. The program in question was the NNXT sampler in Reason loading up a gigasample steinway. Maybe Reason is more optimal on the mac, I don't know, it's just that it seemed like a funny fact. Just for your information, yes I know Wintel machines could be good when they are made for audio, people swear by their gigasampler stations, etc. There's also custom solutions only available for PC's like Sadie etc. Those are great, for those who could set it up, afford it, etc. great, and for the rest of us, I'm just saying Macs are great.

Thanks very much for all your input for a PC user and somewhat off topic at that. Tried not to fill up the screen with tech muscle flexing since this forum, even though filled with "heavy hitters," seems to be more friendly and informative than a lot of PC forums where "mine is bigger and better than yours" seems to be the name of the game.
For years, I worked with a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz soundcard and QSE software on PC to produce orchestral midi and musical scores but I became fed up with the amount of extra work and tweaking that PCs seem to require. Hence, the question about will Macs do it with pre-installed software, easier and with less options setup screens that have to be endlessly tweaked to provide the desired result.
I'll check out the Mac newsgroups. And even if only a lurker, if I get a Mac, I'll be back!

Have to say that there has been a pc in every studio in London that I have worked in. They form an integral part of their opperations: printing invoices and letters as well as allowing bored band members to play Doom.
