"Core Audio (part of OSX) provides a property called "Preferred Channels
For Stereo", which allows a two track audio application accessing a
multi-channel interface to direct/receive its audio to or from a
specific pair of ins or outs. For example, if you wanted the audio
from iTunes to go to the SPDIF outs of the 2408 instead of analog 1-2
you would need this feature.

Until the release of the 10.2.5 update no OSX software, including Sound
Manager supported this part of the Core Audio spec, which is why MOTU
has (for now) not included a "monitor outputs" option in the PCI Audio
Console under OSX. MOTU is currently working to add this functionality
to the driver in OS X.

You will have no problem using the SPDIF output in a host app such as
DP4."
