I'm just dipping my toe in the water at the minute, I've got into ProTools Free & a disk full of samples (basslines, drum loops, the usual) but I want to change the actual files (speed up, slow down, etc) I was wondering if I can do this in Protools or I need another piece of software (mac).

If you don't mind tuning/detuning the files, what you're looking for is Pitching.
If you do (mind), what you're looking for is Stretching.
PT includes those two plugs (Pitch Shift and Time Compression/expansion ->in the Audiosuite menu). For most needs those two are...crap. Try them anyway...
Good but expensive plugs to buy:
-Pitch N Time by Serato
-Speed by Wave Mechanics.

There are also standalone apps that do the work but I can't help you since I don't use them (I don't see the point in using them->I need to hear the result directly in PT).
