I am getting glitches during playback , with no live instrumetns plugged in. I have tried different buffer settings in the control panel window and it does nothing? Could it be the firewire cable or something else?

Have you upgraded part of the system (carbon extension for example?) I found something related but on X…
 Another cause can be an inadequate locking between Logic and the 896.
