If apple says JUST that, they are on drugs. Mach 3.0 comes from... mklinux. And it has nothing to do whatsoever with bsd.

OSX is, in order:
+ NextStep 4.2, thats and old mach and an old BSDish userland (This was mostly MacOSX 10.0)
+ plus the Mach 3.0 from mklinux (MacOSX 10.1)
+ plus (some) userland adapted from bsd 4.4 (MacOSX 10.2)
