QUOTE (Nantho @ Fri 26 Dec 2008, 06:40) just a joke, but to be honest you can't deny that most of us are male actually. as for the sexual orientation... I really don't know anyway if this headline hurts your feelings I apologize "Most of us" = who? Audio geeks? I suppose. But my mind immediately turns to art history -- every genre -- and makes me wonder if "most of us" really are male or if we just (still, as we have done historically) under-report women's involvement. Many of us -- depending on age range -- were raised to act as support staff, and/or to downplay our own activities accordingly. I use my initials, "CK," instead of my full name, and 9/10 times people assume I'm male til they meet me. Especially in the academia-experimental scene. Even in my rock days... I remember playing Boston one time, and beforehand I was at back-of-house tuning my brother's and my guitars, and the house soundman walked by and said, "Cool! A chick roadie!" I said, "Uh huh" and finished, and then got onstage and led our band's soundcheck (you know, with all the songs I'd written, and sang, and played guitar on). At the end of the night mr. soundguy asked if he could be our permanent soundguy. Uh huh. ANYWAY.... Mostly it surprises me that more people still don't stop to think about their assumptions and word choices. And really, does it get any geekier than Laurie Spiegel? Or Laurie Anderson? Or Pauline Oliveros? They have got some serious geek on! They were kicking major electronic butt before most of your readers were born. But, most importantly , I'm the audio geek in the house and I want one (or two) of those rad bracelets for myself!
