before I spend my hard earned cash does anyone know of a cheapish usb mixer with automation that will most certainly work with Logic Express 7.2?

Can you be more specific when you say "with Automation?"

Logic can work with anything that is doing typical MIDI. Are you looking for a cheap USB mixer with moving faders and bi-directional communication with Logic?

IMO, your best bet is to consider a Mackie Control and a good quality I/O just for audio.

Give me your budget, and I'll make some recommendations.
