it might be to do with the issues apparent in 10.4.8 regarding external firewire devices....
I have a macbook pro, loving it.... but I'm careful NOT to upgrade too quickly.....unless I've done the research...... so my system for my DTP is 10.4.8 and my music partition is 10.4.7...until this bug is fixed..... may or may not be your problem...... trick is to not get too far ahead of yourself.... if you do .... you volunteer yourself as an consumer beta tester.....i.e. your work don't get paid for....but you still are discovering problems for apple / rme...etc... I have a fireface 400 .... incredible bit of gear..... works fine in 10.4.7 my mate just bought a project mix....m Audio... it's working terribly because he's in 10.4.8 so he had to downgrade...(A real pain) Hope this helps...
