My Powerbook G4 is a couple of years old. When I bought it, I upgraded to 512 by adding a 256 memory card to the standard 256 memory already offered. But in "About this Mac" it says I only have 256 for memory.... shouldn't I be registering 512 if I put in a second memory card?

Thanks

Sid

you could have either ....

a. an improperly installed SO-DIMM. (or a DIMM that just needs to be re-seated
b. a bad SO-DIMM
c. a bad memory slot (logic board)

click "More info..." in the About this mac.. dialog box

click on memory, it will show you which slots have active memory. I'll assume for the moment that it will only show 1 active slot with 256MB in it.

verify that the SO-DIMMs are installed correctly by removing each and re-installing.

swap the SO-dimms. if the problem follows the SO-DIMM you have a bad stick.

if the problem stays in the same slot , you have a bad logic board.

you should do the re-seating and swapping in one step. this will save some reboot time.wink.gif

good luck!
