first time buyer for a mac. I will be running Logic. question is should I wait till the new g5 with the new chip comes out or would it be just as good to buy now.I am an older producer and use analogue studios but am about to make the change and do it all myself. Thanks in advance. Jon.

Depends. The advice given is usually not to be an early adopter (new chip. new system) and let it shake out a few month. That puts release of the first generation at about November of 2006 in my book---and real user feedback in by 3/2007.

The G-5 chip will be supported for at least another 4 more years. I run an iMac G5 with 2 Gig Ram - adequate for most things -- just wish I had a Dual G5 with 8 Gigs of RAM to score a symphony with one shot in Logic when my new EWQLSO Gold Pro arrives this fall.

There are some great deals right now on older models of Dual G5 Machines with all the kinks worked out -- the newer faster ones also (ClubMac, MaMall, etc.) Get LOTS OF RAM (if I could do it over I would start with 4 Gig) and get working. Computer envy when the new model comes out?

Computer envy is an ugly thing and should not hold up creative production.

PS - I started with Mac before hard drives -- switched off DOS 1 and never have looked back. Meanwhile have seen a couple of friends in the MS/Intel world committed to the happy farm trying to keep abreast of change.
