I have a 120 Gig OWC Mercury Elite Pro Firewire 800 drive I have been using for about 6 months now. It is the fastest and quietest hard drive I have ever used. Also just about the cheapest hard drive I have ever bought.

I have been using it as a recording drive with a Pro Tools Digi002 rack on my Aluminum Powerbook, and it has been absolutely trouble free. I haven't really tried it with more than about 10 tracks, but it has handled everything I have thrown at it without slowdowns or hangups.

I recommend them highly.

On the Retrospect part, it's actually Retrospect Express, a non-network "lite" version of the full Retrospect application. It's pretty much the same as LaCie's free "Silverkeeper" backup software (available at lacie.com), which I use at work to backup external drives to internal drives and vice-versa. it works for simple scheduled backups very well.
