"They getcha in th church an' then ya git baptized And as ya grow a little yu git critisized So ya can't be adventurous in case ya git penalised And then ya realize it's all glamourised lies" (a reflection on society - the opening verse of a loooong rap I penned in 1990) I feel rap used to be about street poetry, grafitti, breakin' & hip hop, from somewhere like the Bronx, the birthplace of Hip Hop. Everyone was BROTHERS, or so it seemed. A large section of the scene seems to now be hellbent on dissin' each other, and some gangsta rap even goes so far as to incite in some extreme cases, SHOOTING each other!! The 'cool' thang to have now, it would seem, is a bulletproof SUV, with bulletproof tyres...but of course any big rap artist is nobody unless they own at least 5 of them...what a lot of unnecessary phsychological pressure to have to take on board... I mean, can you imagine Keith Richards shooting Jimi Hendrix for being a better guitarist back in the 60's?!? How about Van Morrison running over Bob Dylan in the street 'cause he was envious of the success of his song "Like A Rolling Stone?" Or, Britney Spears giving Christina Aguilera a gunshot wound for doing better than her in last month's singles chart... It all seems to have gone a bit pear shaped in some strange quarters... Most artists used to work together more (Live Aid and other great causes spring to mind)...Now it would appear that the emphasis with a lot of rap artists (especially in the states) is on competing to win some kind of "contest" to achieve superiority in terms of popularity, sales and commercial success. I personally don't understand this obsession with outgunnin' "the best"...I feel it clouds the real issue of expressing oneself from a place that reflects some kinda truth...or inspiration...as a gift...to others...? I thought the best kinda recognition is when you're being creative from da source...innit? Ego ramblings force me to "turn that dial"...but then, that's just me...(I'm referring to the OFF switch, not the volume knob...) Call me old fashioned... So...should I register with ASCAP any lyrics I put into this thread?! Maybe I should send 'em to myself first in a date sealed & stamped envelope... No, I got a better idea...hey MC BIG P, how about YOU put your lyrics down here first...! And if they're good, then WE"LL register them with ASCAP and put 'em out over our own grooves... PEACE!

Oops! MC_BIG_P... I never realised you were just 13! I'm just an older guy who knows too much...about too little...

13!!?... That explains a lot... Specially why that member just posted that weird message and never showed up again... He probably got a good spanking for using the Mac without parental permission ! "Go to your room and do your homework! Oh yeah, and take off that offensive cap! ". (-:
