Basically I've got two rigs, my home studio and my mobile studio. Both are currently running Logic 8. My laptop is a Power Book g4 1.5 ghz, 1gb of Ram. I'm finding that, although Logic runs, it's very slow and I basically have to freeze every track that I'm not working on, a little annoying. What are peoples thoughts on migrating the laptop back to Logic 7 or even Logic 6? Or are there other ways to speed up the processing power? How much faster will the software run back in Logic 6? I realize I'll be sacrificing some compatibility as far as swapping projects back and forth, and also a number of features, but if that means I can work more efficently, maybe it's worth it. What are people's thoughts?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

redstrype!!! This is something I "Actually Know About", finally.
I had a G4 864 running 60 "Stupid" Audio Tracks running and blowing down the music retailers shop. This was three or four years ago. I was using a RME Card and RME Hammerfall DSP Multiface. I'm convinced "Audio Cards" are worth the extra money. They can process signals faster.
I upgraded to a 17" 1 GHz PowerBook shortly after. I had problems, but, I think the problem was I was a "True Newbie" "Pathetic" "Sad Broken Shell", well, you get the point.... I work mainly with a G5 Dual 2GHz. Rock solid.
Your gear sounds good, but both my PowerBooks would "Whine" and they got hot. Not "babe "Hott", hot like: "This thang could ignite 'hot'". What Sound Cards and Interface are you using? I think this is where the problem is. How much/many Tracks of MIDI? How much Free Space do you have on your HD?
I think you musicians who depend on Laptops to do gigs are very brave. I've seen 'Dreams' and 'Nightmares'... I'm too scared for that leap. I do enjoy Laptops for Listening, Cleaning Tracks/Files, Doing E-mails, when in bed or travelling but I would never dare get on stage with one! Yep, you guys are brave. You're like Race Car Drivers, Fighter Pilots... I feel like I'm only learning to walk... "Yer damn youngsters"!!!
I have seen and heard a G4 864 on ASIO!!!!! Logic 5, RME and 60 Audio Tracks "rock" a music store to the point where they said: "Turn It Down" aas they gazed in amazement... "I was the first guy on the block with that 'Set-Up', in Hamburg, and these are some serious whizz kids "Wunderkind"... They have all since left me far behind, I just had the dough at the time...
PowerBooks and I imagine ProBooks are really great, I hope so. Damn, they are expensive... My 17" PowerBook now relegated to E-mails, Surfing and writing songs. Hey, 30 Free Trial!!!! www.masterwriter.com
It will change the way you write lyrics... Great tool, wish I would have had it 30 years ago. If you write lyrics, this is "The Joint"! No more books, scraps of paper, dictionary, thesaurus, notebook... You end up writing three songs from one as so many rhymes create new and different ideas...
I've had my rant.... Om
