DIGIDESIGN DIGI 002 QUICK RESPONSE
SURPRISES - GOOD -------------------------- 1. IT ACTUALLY EXISTS... 2. BUILT-IN CONTROL SURFACE AND USABLE AS a stand-alone digital mixer - i'm all agog. AGLEAGGLE AGLE [but this means not really rackmountable (mmm...896) and a lot of cable dangling of the back for such a small desktop box]
SURPRISES - NOT SO GOOD ---------------------------- 1. ONLY 4 PREAMPS - I WAS SORT OF EXPECTING 8 (compete with 896) 2. INFO kind of incomplete - are the 1/4" outs and ins BALanced (like the 896) or UNBALanced like the (001). i think unbalanced. SIGH! 3. KINDA UGLY - but hey whatev.
GAHHH - what a wrench in an almost complete plan. MAYBE i am asleep and dreaming.
SETH.

WAIT - i am confused. WHY AREN'T people talking about this at all?
DO YOU SHARE MY GENERAL DISGUST with digidesign and their sort of unfriendly business strategy? sticking my neck out a bit there... please call me on this i'd love to discuss it
after an afternoon/evening of thinking about it I am pretty sure i am still going with the 896.

Why? Maybe because most of the people (3/4th) on the site are in the french forums and have already discussed of it, their love/hate relationship with Digi 2 weeks ago (well, the love/hate they do that all the time . But it's great you point it here Got to wake them up a bit I L-O-V-E the commercial video with the 002 lying in a sort of studio until the guy take it and you see it wasn't connected… A main point is at the price you can check other solutions maybe less integrated but more versatile software wise. (and please, let the shift key sleep a little, we can't hear the music

I spoke with a digi rep who wasn't all the complementary of the 002. Have you thought of picking up a cheap 001 on ebay? I have used my 001 for 3 years now with a 7 year old macintosh and see no reason to get rid of it.
Regarding preamps: As I understand it, the preamps on the digidesign equipment are better than its competitors–focusrite. I can attest to the incredible sound quality of these preamps, especially when used with a good mic.
One drawback of ProTools software: You do not get unlimited "virtual" tracks. The latest update of protoolsLE allows you only 32 tracks max. This makes mixing and arranging messy and combersome as you cannot split up every instrument on its own track most of the time. Fortunately, you can use third party software with digidesign equipment.
What is the price difference between 002 and the other? Maybe that will be a determining factor. Remember, you will need to buy FX plugins!

To be sure, the Digi 002 is worthy of some drool. I'm still going to get the motu 828, as it better suits my purposes and my bank account.
As far as the number of preamps...I guess that you can't everything. It is an interface AND a control surface, mind you, and my guess would be that the 1/4" jacks are balanced. This will be marketed as the step above the 001 and they're targeting portable pro's who need balanced ins. Just my opinion (hope).
Digi consistently pisses me off with their "our way or the highway" strategy, but I am also consistently impressed with the quality of what they put out.

Oops! Dodgydesign will insist on calling themselves the best, won't they? But then again, any inferior company on their way down is bound to act like a sheister towards their customers in the marketplace, aren't they? Grab the money while yer can, ker-ching ker-ching, etc... Rather a tad transparent of them... Digi 001 isn't a great choice of kit. It's like something Radio Shack would manufacture...plasticky, cheap and with a price tag way in excess of it's wares... As for Digi 002...damann mentioned something about a large lump of plastic...
