Hi Folks,
Sorry if I have asked a question which has been asked a thousand times before.... I have a G3 266 on OS 8.6 with M Audio Audiophile 2496 soundcard and Logic Audio Silver which works fine. I just inherited a G4 450MhZ on OSX 10.3.9. It seems Logic Silver won't work on OSX. What do I do?? The new fangled Logic Express seems to be less powerful than the old Audio Silver since it has only 12 audio tracks etc. (Audio Silver has 24 audio tracks). Can I run Silver on my G4? Would I have to install OS 9. whatever? or is there other software which would equal the power of Logic Silver???? Thanks in advance, Davie |

As you just picked a "slow" mac, you'll be way better under OS 9 to run logic, OS X will kill the G4 on the spot. i've been a year long on a G3 400 myself and I can tell you, even only for the net and some writing it was sloooooooooooooow. A G4 450 would be better, but not enough.
Maybe you could make it a favour and offer him on day an accelerator card but for now, OS 9 is the best and only bet. For the breeds of Logic, I let users enlighten you. Note: if you have a firewire hard drive, and if you keep OS X installed, DON'T move the FW drive from OS X to OS 9 to OS X, you'll have troubles and loose data, keep the drive under one OS only (either X or 9) -------------------- Our Classifeds • Nos petites annonces • Terms Of Service / Conditions d'Utilisation • Forum Rules / Règles des Forums • MacMusic.Org & SETI@Home

Hi there
Thanks for that info. So, next question - should I flatten the HD and install OS9. whatever, OR install OS9 and keep OSX in and do a "dual boot" thing and boot up on OS9 when I want to run Logic Silver? I have 512MB ram at the moment. Thanks again fior replying Davie |

I have 512MB ram at the moment. Thanks again fior replying Davie I've got a G4 dual (450Mhz) 1.5GB RAM. I have the Audiophile 2496 PCI card installed ( used mainly for digital in/out ) plus M-Audio USB MIDISport 8 x 8 midi interface box. I also have LOGIC Silver 4.8.1 which ( of course ) will only run in OS 9. It works great. I refused to move up to LOGIC Express or PRO when Apple took over EMagic and would not give me an upgrade price reduction. In addition to increasing your RAM I also recommend installing another drive. I've got 4 drives. The G4 has lots of room for installing drives and RAM. The original drive has both OS X and 9. One drive has TIGER the other has Panther and one drive has the original OS 9. I also use a FIREWIRE hard for AUDIO only. Perhaps you could keep us up to date on what you decide to do. Hi Macmidiguy
Thanx for the info. Yes - I too feel that Apple should have allowed some price reduction for registered Logic users to upgrade - a wee bit of a reward for loyalty - particularly for the Mac users! You're gonna have to excuse my ignorance here - I am aware that many people record all audio onto a separate hard drive and that it is indeed the recommended method. I have never done this and only used the built-in HD to put everything on. (A measly 6GB HD on the G3). I now have a 27GB drive on the G4 and reckon I should invest in another drive. You say you have different OS's on these different drives. You're confusing me now! You also say that the HD you use for audio is a FireWire drive. Is this best or should I fit a HD inside the G4 similar to the one that it already has? Also - if I install OS9 on my 27Gig drive, can I boot up ONLY on OS9 or will Panther still be running in some way - using up valuable memory? I'm trying to find the most cost-effective way of moving this forward - even considered flogging the G3 complete with the Audiofile card and Logic Silver and moving up to Logic Express and getting a Delta 1010 card but I'd probably only get peanuts for it all and that Audiofile soundcard works really well. Fact is, the G3 works well with Silver too but only 6GB drive etc and a G4 sitting looking at me with nothing to do. It looks like the best thing to do would be, as you say, get OS9, more memory and a second HD and put the Audoifile 2496 in the G4. Possible upgrade the soundcard to the Delta 1010 if I come into money.... Davie |

QUOTE Yes - I too feel that Apple should have allowed some price reduction for registered Logic users to upgrade I think the problem is that the Silver / Gold / Platinum -categories don't stand anymore. However, you can upgrade from Platinum to Pro 7. Upgrading to OS X and Pro 7 (or even Express) is well worth the money, the functionality of the system is from another galaxy. QUOTE I am aware that many people record all audio onto a separate hard drive and that it is indeed the recommended method. That is correct. It is faster when the whole bandwidth of the HD bus can be used for audio. QUOTE You say you have different OS's on these different drives. You're confusing me now! You can have OS X and OS9 on the same drive if you like. QUOTE You also say that the HD you use for audio is a FireWire drive. Is this best or should I fit a HD inside the G4 similar to the one that it already has? Depends of the speed of your machine's HD system, but I don't believe there'll be much difference in practice. Whatever you find more convinient. Go FW if you need to be mobile with your files. QUOTE Also - if I install OS9 on my 27Gig drive, can I boot up ONLY on OS9 or will Panther still be running in some way - using up valuable memory? It makes no difference in the usage of RAM if you have OS X installed on your HD or not. If you natively boot to OS 9 OS X will not be active in any way - and vice versa. |

Hiya
Hey thanks coldharbour. You'll be able to tell by now that I'm not really sure of what I'm doing. Thanks for your comprehensive answers to my questions. So do you reckon I should bite the bullet and upgrade to Logic Express? Does Express still have the "Digital Factory" stuff? - like timestretch and pitchshift? I had been under the impression that Logic Express had only 12 audio tracks, but now realise that it has 255!! The way the software was advertised gave the impression that a maximum of 12 audio tracks were available - BUUUT what they meant was that you could only record on up to 12 tracks simultaneously.(plenty plenty - even to record a full drumkit with bass) I had misunderstood this. So it would seem that Logic Express is far superior to Logic Audio Silver? Is the functionality "from another galaxy"? ie. more straightforward with less mumbo jumbo? D |

QUOTE So it would seem that Logic Express is far superior to Logic Audio Silver? Is the functionality "from another galaxy"? ie. more straightforward with less mumbo jumbo? In my opinion, yes. And I mean the whole package - OS X included. Once you get used to OS X you never want to go back to OS9 again - and Logic Express is superior to Silver. However, as stated earlier in this thread, your current machine is quite slow. So untill you get a bit faster machine (a second-hand G4 is still fine for Logic and OS X, but with more power) you might want to stay under OS9.
