Hi,

The difference between updating and *upgrading* are two entirely different things, and here goes:
Updating would be going, from say 1.0 to 1.1 (kinda like how in OS X, you'll have 10.3.6, 10.3.7, etc.)
Upgrading is jumping to a new, (hopefully revamped!) version of software, in this case Garageband 1.0 to 2.0 (aka, Mac OS 10.3 Panther -> 10.4 Tiger) Right. So, the long and short of it: you will have to pay, and hopefully it will be worth it. (One thing to keep in mind - software companies are always upgrading their software, and sometimes 'enough is enough'. In other words, if it ain't broke, don't fix it... Although it's not as fun as having the brand-spanking-new version, all the 'whiz-bang' additions can sometimes be useless.)

Cheers,
Man-oh-man

I suggest getting an audio interface. because the mic is built into your laptop it will pickup the sound of the laptop first. trying to sing into it causes weird reflections from the sound bouncing off of the laptop surface.

Still it will pick up the sound of the laptop first. I suggest some type of direct box, or a preamp and mike.
