Running OS9.1 on a G4 with a recent fresh install of system software and the following four music programs:

Reason 1.01
Peak 2.5
Recycle 2.0
TimeBandit 2.5.2

The machine won't boot at all, even with all system extensions disabled. It gets almost to the end of the boot process and then hangs with a variety of error messages depending on its whim at the time. The problem started after the installation of the music programs.

Anyone else had this problem?

Do you have any PCI cards installed? Any USB devices? If you do disconnect them and try to boot.

If that doesn't work place the system disc you received with your system into your dvd/cd-rom drive, and boot up while depressing the 'C' key. That will cause your machine to boot from the cd-rom.

If the machine boots your problem is software. Run Apple's Disc Repair to detect bad files. You can try to repair the file, if it can't be repaired you can drag and drop a good file from the system folder.

Hope that helps let me know what you find.
