Basically any modern scanner with usb/fw/scsi interface from a reputable maker like Epson, HP and the like should work just fine.
Have an Epson Perfection SU-1640 myself at home, it works great.

What about mac driivers. Are they on the provided discs or available for download? or does osx have drivers built in?

Depends on the Scanner, in OS-X you get a bunch of drivers for printers at least. ( HP, Epson Canon - among others) Dont remember offhand if any drivers for scanners were included.
To my Epson-1640 - I download drivers from Epson-s website. They install as a twain-module/driver, so I can aquire the scanner from the Filemenu in Photoshop.
Safest bet would be to visit the scanner vendors website-s and download the proper drivers.
