Can anyone help? I am utterly new to cubase or any audio apps. I want to record from my record player into my powerbook. I have all the right cables to get it into the audio in socket, but can I record from it using cubase or do I need another piece of software? also once I have a track I want to be able to edit out loops from the tracks (ie sampling like in hip-hop) and use the samples to make new tracks....
Am I on the right track...?
Any advice will be greatfully recieved...thanks.

I could be wrong, but does SX actually work with the native Mac audio? If it does, you should be able to select it and record two tracks (ie stereo L and R) simultaneously.

You might be better off getting either Sound Studio or one of the Peak versions (LE or the full version). They're specifically designed as two-track wave editors and I know both work with the Mac's built-in sound.

Having recorded your track, you can then edit out any bits you like. I used Sound Studio for a long time, then recently got the full version of Peak. OK, it's pretty pricey, but holy cow - that's some fantastic audio-editing software!

www.digitalvillage.co.uk, Soundhouse Turnkey at www.turnkey.uk.com, www.dolphinmusic.co.uk or any other advertiser from the Sound on Sound mag pages should be able to help. You might even be able to order direct from Peak's UK distributors (whose name I forget...). If you go to the Bias site (http://www.bias-inc.com), check it out there.

The full version of Peak is obviously the most expensive, but I can almost guarantee that you'll never need another wave editing app again. It's simply the best at what it does, IMHO. For what you seem to want to do (chop up and mutate existing recordings), it's perfect.

You can get a fully functioning trial of Peak 4 from the Bias site.
